A great sword or two-handed sword (called Zweihänder in German) is a large, heavy sword intended to be held in both hands, rather than in conjunction with a shield or secondary weapon, as was sometimes done with smaller swords. Some specific types of great swords developed in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, including the Scottish claymore and the German Flammenschwert.
